Program Descriptions

WSA is offering learn to sail programs for children of all ages and levels throughout the summer. Our coaches are CYA (Canadian Yachting Association) certified and our courses cover the the basics of sailing in a safe environment focusing on fun and boating safety.

Courses are held at the old youth hostel site on Alta Lake Road.

Optimist and Youth I

This course is designed for beginner sailors that have never sailed before. The certified CYA instructors will teach the basic sailing skills in a fun and safe enviroment. The course covers water safety, rigging and knots, seamanship and basic sailing manoeuvres. Learning how to skipper and crew the boat builds teamwork and leadership skills. This course follows the Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) CANsail I curriculum and participants may obtain CYA certification if all skills are demonstrated during the course.
The curriculum for the Optimist I course and the Youth II courses differ only by the type of boat used. The Optimist boat is smaller and suitable for younger sailors, while the Pirate is a larger sail boat suitable for teens.

The Optimist dinghy is the boat used for the 8-12 yr old, and is sailed by 1 or 2 individuals for this course. The Pirate dinghy is the boat used for the 13-18 yr old and is sailed by 2 or 3 individuals for this course. Refer to the Coop Fleet section on the website to learn about these boats.

Optimist and Youth II
